Morvern, by Oban,
Argyll, Scotland, PA80 5UZ
Ardtornish estate is in the southerly corner of the beautiful Morvern peninsula, which forms the extreme south-western point of the Highland region.
Morvern is approximately 200 square miles, with Ardnamurchan to the north-west, Sunart and Ardgour to the north, and bounded by the Sound of Mull to the south, Loch Linnhe to the east and Loch Sunart to the north. Morvern is a stunning and dramatic region with a geology and topography that reflect a turbulent volcanic history. The main settlement in Morvern is Lochaline, which also serves as a ferry terminal to Fishnish on Mull.
Lochaline supports a pier side café, a general store, a post office, a pub, a hotel, a petrol station, a medical centre, a primary school, a church, a craft shop and a social club. There is also a Dive Centre and an award winning restaurant (The White House Restaurant), as well the Lochaline Sand Mine and a community forest nearby. There is also an anchorage facility at Lochaline Harbour.
DIRECTIONS
In all of these circumstances the quickest way to drive to Ardtornish is to take the Corran Ferry across Loch Linnhe just 8 miles south of Fort William. The ferry takes about 5 minutes and saves a good hour’s driving around the top of the Loch. The current cost of a one way trip is £7.30 and there are usually two sailings every hour.
The latest Corran Ferry Timetable is at this link: https://www.highland.gov.uk/corranferry
1.As you drive off the Corran Ferry onto the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, turn left onto the A861 and continue straight ahead for 12.5 miles.
2.Turn left off the A861 onto the A884 at the top of Loch Sunart where the turning is signposted to Lochaline and Mull Ferry, continue straight ahead for 15.7 miles.
3.Turn left off the A884 onto the estate road where the turning is signposted Ardtornish. You are now only a few minutes from your destination.
The drive from the Corran Ferry to Ardtornish takes under an hour. If you get to Lochaline village you have gone a bit too far!
An excellent cottage in an excellent location
5/5 Star Upfront Reviews - January 2025
Our first stay at The Boathouse and it exceeded our hopes for the week. We arrived during a particularly cold spell in January and found the cottage to be warm and welcoming, helped, no doubt, by being double glazed.. The estate farm shop kept us supplied with very good locally made meals, as nearby eating out opportunities in January are a little restricted.. One of the best things about the cottage was its quiet location and its view out over the loch from the patio doors. Although we did not see as much water based wildlife as some other visitors before us, our wildlife highlight was the nightly visit by pine martens onto the cottage patio in search of dinner. Plenty of walks from the cottage without needing to use the car, but also the opportunity to use the regular ferry to visit Mull for the day. This is a cottage that we would happily return to.
Fabulous peaceful short break in stunning location.
5/5 Star Upfront Reviews - December 2024
This our 4th visit. Stunning but very remote with walks from the door. Magical location with lots of wildlife including otters if you are fortunate. This was our first winter trip - lovely and warm and cosy in the Boathouse with its big log fire. We travelled from England via Glencoe and the Corran ferry - journey and destination both spectacular! The Boathouse rooms are beautiful and well equipped. Beautiful new kitchen and farm shop and village shop for supplies. Would recommend to anyone except those who are infirm or with small children - as there are 2 sets of slate steps in the living room which could catch out the unwary.
A comfortable cosy cottage with wonderful views over the loch and hills
4.8/5 Stars Upfront Reviews - November 2024
My friend and I booked The Boat House for a week in November, it coincided with the first week of winter in Scotland. I think we had every kind of weather: snow, rain, sunshine, wind, gloomy conditions, but it didn't in any way take away from our enjoyment. The cottage is warm and comfortable with plenty of space. It is very well equipped, the kitchen had almost everything guests could ever need.
The best thing about it though was the view from the patio doors looking over the loch. We're both wildlife lovers, in fact, I'm a professional photographer and guide, so seeing otters (two families of three - both at the same once!), greenshank, curlew, white-tailed sea eagles, little grebes and more on the loch every day was fantastic. In the evening we had one (and once two) pine martens coming by for a snack as well as a good variety of little birds too.
We only left the Estate twice: to visit Kingairloch and Mull and loved the fact there was no need to go anywhere else to satisfy our needs. We didn't visit the farm shop on this visit, but have been in there before and were impressed by the variety of goods on offer and the friendliness of the lady serving (May 2024).
I hope I can return in the not-too-distant future. Morvern is my favourite holiday destination and it's great to find such a lovely base. A shame, like with almost all Morvern self-catering accommodation, it's so expensive in the peak season, but winter is a great time to visit too!
